Tonight, Square Enix announced via its Facebook page that Final Fantasy I and II are being ported to the iPhone, complete with upgraded visuals and new touchscreen controls. Square did not elaborate much beyond showing off a quartet of screenshots from the two games, but those are sumptuous enough to surely send fans into a frenzy.
The original Final Fantasy was released in Japan in 1987 and went on to spawn one of the longest running and most successful franchises in the history of videogames. Both games are celebrated by fans of the series and with Final Fantasy excitement at a fever pitch over the impending North American launch of XIII, Square knows the time to strike with these retro releases is now.
