An hour long demo of Final Fantasy XIII had a bigger effect on Japanese PS3 sales than most full game releases, according to the latest sales data from Media Create. Fueled by the Final Fantasy VII Advent Children Complete release, Japanese PS3 sales skyrocketed in Japan over the week of April 13 through April 19, placing the system in the number one spot, far ahead of even the mighty PSP and DSi.
PS3 sold 62,527 units over the week, a four fold increase over the previous week's 16,701. PSP and DSi continued to jockey positions, with the PSP coming out on top this week.
The full hardware chart for the week is as follows. The previous week's figure is in parentheses.
* PS3: 62,527 (16,701)
* PSP: 40,065 (40,886)
* DSi: 38,287 (40,673)
* Wii: 13,221 (13,349)
* X360: 8,652 (10,134)
* DS Lite: 6,438 (6,869)
On the software side of things, Advent Children Complete is technically a Blu-ray release, and is thus not counted in Media Create's software charts. The firm did provide a sales figure of 275,000 units for the Blu-ray, although how many of these were bundled with the FFXIII demo is unclear. The movie was available in three packages: solo, bundled with the FFXIII demo, and bundled with the FFXIII demo and a limited edition 160 gigabyte black PS3 unit.
Advent Children aside, the number one game for the week was Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of the Sky. It slaughtered all its opposition, outselling the second top selling game more than five fold, despite having just two sales days under its belt, compared to the four for all the other titles.
Here's the full software chart:
* 1. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of the Sky (Pokemon, DS): 141,771
* 2. Sengoku Basara Battle Heroes (Capcom, PSP): 27,942
* 3. Mario & Luigi RPG 3!!! (Nintendo, DS): 18,799
* 4. Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G PSP the Best (Capcom, PSP): 18,028
* 5. Katei Kyoshi Hitman Reborn! DS Fate of Heat II (Takara Tomy, DS): 17,502
* 6. Fantasy Golf Pangya (Takara Tomy, PSP): 13,357
* 7. Pro Baseball Famisuta DS 2009 (Namco Bandai, DS): 10,937
* 8. Musou Orochi Z (Koei, PS3): 9,744
* 9. Gundam Senjo no Kizuna Portable (Namco Bandai, PSP): 9,427
* 10. Deca Sporta 2 (Hudson, Wii): 9,051
Next week's sales charts will reflect this week's release of Monster Hunter G with the Monster Hunter 3 demo. Wii has a good chance of being at the top both in hardware and software.
