Why is it we never got another Final fantasy 6 type game?

If they had told FF13's story like they did in that very shortened version then the game would probably have been received a lot better. Part of the complaints was that the story didn't really help explain things and most of the characters spent all their time whining.

As for why there are no more FF6 styled games... Probably because new consoles with more powerful graphics capabilities came out and Square wanted to make things prettier and use more power than they had on the SNES level hardware. Which, to be fair, if they gone with trying to put FF7 on SNES or even N64 I'm not sure it would have been nearly as good. I'd imagine they would have had to cut a lot of parts out, cut the audio quality down and remove the FMV sequences in order to make room to fit it all on a 64mb cartridge (instead of 3 CDs at 700MB per disc).
And after FFX Square started to forgot that new/pretty graphics are only part of the game, you need compelling story and good gameplay.

Though perhaps an indie developer is working on something like a spiritual FF6 sequel?

what makes you think that a indie developer is doing that? But I would love another FF 6 look alike game as that is what I liked most about FF 6 was it's looks.

Of course what they just did to the mobile version of FF 6 has made me sick.

I just figure that there are enough people out there who want that style of game that someone of them also wants it and has the skills to make it.

Plus it'd be nice to see.
