Two months ago Dengeki PlayStation magazine introduced us to three of the main characters of Final Fantasy Type-0: Ace, Nine and Queen. All three are members of the elite Class 0 of Suzaku Peristylium, a magic school in the nation of Rubrum, and are fighting to protect their country from the other three warring nations in the land of Orience.

This time Weekly Famitsu has added King, Sice and Eight to the Class 0 roster. King is a stoic man of few words, but has a kind heart underneath. He carries a pair of large caliber handguns which can do a lot of damage to enemies at close range. Sice is a brash, tomboyish girl who never hesitates to point out weakness in others. She carries a scythe, and among her abilities is a technique called Black Hole which sucks enemies in and restricts their movement. Eight is a young man with keen powers of observation and the ability to quickly grasp battle situations. Rather than carry a weapon that would kill his enemies, he is an expert at martial arts and prefers to fight with his feet and fists.

Also appearing will be Arecia Al-Rashia, a sorceress who heads the Suzaku Peristylium where the students of Class 0 train. Arecia is a genius who has made great strides in the use of magic, but has a reputation for unexpected behavior. Finally, two familiar names will be returning: Gilgamesh appears as the l'Cie of the Genbu crystal, wreaking havoc on the countryside after forgetting his mission, and Odin takes the role of a fearsome military god.

Furthermore, Famitsu detailed the mission system that will be integral to gameplay: during the course of the game, you'll receive orders from Rubrum's military command through a group of Moogles called the Cranberry Knights. Mission objectives and orders will often change in real time as battles progress, so you're meant to feel as though you're taking part in an ongoing war. Some missions will even involve liberating occupied cities from enemy forces, thereby gaining access to new shops and new information from the freed townspeople.

Another key feature will be what the game's creators have dubbed the Active World Map (AWM). The world of Orience is dotted with towns and dungeons, but the action doesn't stop outside their walls; as your party travels they will be able to take part in battles against enemy forces. These AWM battles make use of a different system to regular combat: instead of controlling each of your party members as they fight, one member of your party takes command of your allies' forces and directs strategy on a larger scale.

Final Fantasy Type-0 will therefore incorporate elements of real-time strategy gameplay -- and as your characters successfully complete missions, their esteem within the military will grow and they'll be given broader authority in AWM missions.

Final Fantasy Type-0 is scheduled for a summer release in Japan, and we look forward to hearing more about it in the coming months. In the meantime you can check out the official Japanese site for even more screenshots.

I really hope this game gives back the airship system used for FF 1-9. This is also sounding like FF 8.

Oh yes! I remember the airship, lol. I've played the old games for FF, and this ship really helped, really.

I can't remember 100%, but I never beaten the last boss, but it was a fight on the airship, I think.

Anyway, the game sounds interesting.

Versus XIII, as far as I know, is basically a 3D version of what an airship in Final Fantasy 1 would be. You get to fly it around the world. I don't know about Type 0 though.
