Most likely to promote one or the other, Square Enix decided to marry the different universes of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. Indeed, A Realm Reborn will contain special missions where you can fight alongside Lightning. Finishing the quests in question, you will get a suit of the Final Fantasy XIII heroine as well as weapons from Lightning Returns. Snow suits for each of the races of the MMORPG will also be available.

It was effectively at the Japan Expo in Paris, France, that Naoki Yoshida, the video game producer working on Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn announced that the crossover from Lightning Returns into XIV would be a cameo of Lightning herself. According to certain speculations while this is mostly a promotional move, Naoki Yoshida is also returning the favour to the team of Final Fantasy XIII that included a costume themed on the gear of the Miqo’te race.
This announcement obtained mixed reactions from the fans of the Final Fantasy franchise due to the fact that opinions concerning the release of the Final Fantasy XIII series and greatly split. Thus, while there are groups expressing their dislike towards this announcement, the fans of Lightning can only be excited about it.
Moreover, while it hasn't been confirmed yet, there is a rumor circulating that other Final Fantasy characters might be present in the MMORPG, including other characters from Lightning Returns as well as Cloud Strife.
And for those that missed the news, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will be released on August 27th, 2013 on PC and PS3, and in 2014 on PS4.
