In what is presumably in response to far lower-than-expected subscriber numbers, Square Enix is extending the free trial period for its enormous and decidedly underwhelming MMORPG, Final Fantasy XIV. The announcement, which informs players that they will get a further 30 days worth of free access to Final Fantasy XIV, immediately follows the news of the extensive changes Square has planned for the game.
The changes range from the more standard new content releases, to things that were sorely missing from the game (like an item search), and simple bug fixes which should never have made it to launch.
We logged in yesterday to take another look at Final Fantasy XIV in its current state, and even one of the game's main social hubs was sparsely populated. We expect the extended trial period is Square's attempt to keep players' attentions long enough for the updates to be rolled out, and hopefully improve enough of the game to even entice some to subscribe.

I doubt this will help.
