Nintendo has revealed new details on downloadable content for Fire Emblem: Awakening. From day one, players will be able to buy new maps, with additional maps “distributed regularly.” For a limited time when Fire Emblem: Awakening first hits stores, the initial map will be free, serving as “an introduction to the steady weekly stream of additional maps.”

The downloadable maps will be available at different price points depending on their content, and future maps will include new storylines or special bonuses like extra experience, gold and rare items. Downloaded maps are accessible in the game by visiting the Outrealm Gate in the world map after completing the fifth mission in story mode.

Nintendo also announced the StreetPass and SpotPass functionality for Awakening. Via StreetPass, players will be able to create teams to hold up to 10 players. While playing Awakening, characters met via StreetPass “will randomly appear on the world map, giving players the option to recruit the team leader with gold, buy any weapons or items the team is carrying or battle and win to recruit the leader for free.” Players can also battle via StreetPass, earning “renown” for battles they win. New content will also be distributed via SpotPass, including new maps with additional storylines, characters and items.

Fire Emblem: Awakening will hit 3DS on February 4th. A demo will be available on the eShop beginning on January 17th.
