The game of football requires an incredible amount of preparation, study and work. It's a thinking man's game chockfull of strategy. So when the University of Louisville Cardinals took to the field this past weekend against the University of Pittsburgh Panthers and lost, there must have been a reason, right? Perhaps the team didn't go over game film as intricately as usual. Maybe there were some key injuries.
Or maybe the University of Louisville Cardinals are just obsessed with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
Louisville football coach Charlie Strong blames Call of Duty for his team's recent loss, according to Cardinal Sports. "Young people are dealing with so much," explained Strong. "I told [the team] Tuesday. I get them off the practice field and we weren't sharp, so you're thinking you come back on Wednesday and we weren't sharp then. There's a new video game that come out and those guys are so… I said, how can you allow a video game to take control of what you have in your hand and what's ahead of you."
Strong continued, explaining what he purportedly told his squad on the Wednesday before the game. "This video game is that important? We'll see how important it is on Saturday. I said, in about a week or so, you're going to be throwing that video game away. But we let a video game take control of us."
"Our guys talk about it," Strong explained, referring to his players constant chatter about Modern Warfare 3. "It's the buzz when you hear it all the time. Call of Duty, the new video game out, so it was a call to duty and they got called to duty Saturday. It's young people. We're dealing with young guys who see something new, they want to try it and it just engulfs them. I heard them talking about it all week." Coach Strong also called out his players for candidly talking about how they played the game on Twitter, citing that some people had even missed class due to playing so much.
The Louisville Cardinals are 5-5 with two games yet to play, both on the road against Connecticut and South Florida.
