Fortnite, the video game which has grown from being one of the world’s most-played titles to become a genuine cultural phenomenon, has announced its latest multimedia crossover: film screenings.

On Friday June 26, the Epic-published game is testing a new feature dubbed ‘Movie Nite’. This will see one of three Christopher Nolan films – Inception, Batman Begins or The Prestige – broadcast within the game for players to watch from an in-world cinema screen.

The title and timing depends on territory (players in Germany will be shown The Prestige while French gamers will have two opportunities to watch Batman Begins, for example), with the publisher explaining in a blog post: “Navigating distribution rights for different countries and languages for full movies is challenging. As part of this first test, we wanted as many people to experience Movie Nite as possible. The film you’ll be able to watch will depend on your country, and unfortunately we couldn’t reach everyone with these screenings.
The company added that the screenings will not be able to be live streamed on platforms like Twitch where it is regularly one of the most-watched games.

No idea how it went but it was an interesting idea. I'm not too sure how to feel about all of this though. Feels like they're taking the game away from being an actual game

Part of me agrees with you and thinks it is weird, but another part of me kind of likes the idea of them continuing to experiment with treating it more like an extended cultural metaverse and not just another shooter.

Well kinda looks like yes but I guess they won't do that ;3

Definitely. It will be nice to see what they come up with in the future and what other partnerships they do. The concert thing they did was amazing and suited the game well imo.

Showing movies in Fortnite is an interesting idea, and can bring new players to Fortnite who installed the game to watch movies. If Fortnite continues to show good films for free or an affordable price like $1 per movie screening, a lot of people may join Fortnite to play the game and watch movies.

BORING.

THat's what I think anyway :p

No one is going to pay to watch a movie in Fortnite but there won't be any copyright issues either since I'm sure they do these deals with the movie producers/publishers.

I think some Fortnite gamers may pay $3 or more a month to watch a few high quality movies a month if you can watch movies in full screen mode, and HD video resolutions.

Movie rentals for $1 or more per movie maybe popular with some users.

I think enough people are hungry for a "going to the movies-like experience" that some might take advantage of a chance to watch a movie there. Heck, Walmart is turning a few of their parking lots into drive-in theaters this summer. I agree though that they have deep pockets and a legal department that will make sure there won't be any copyright issues.
