sourceGoogle will soon be offering free Internet to selected Housing and Urban Development assisted properties across the United States.
The program is part of a White House project called ConnectHome, and will be launching in all current and future Google Fiber markets. Right now this includes Atlanta, Durham, Nashville and Kansas City, and will soon be expanding to cities such as Salt Lake City, Phoenix, Portland, and San Jose.
The Google Internet package will cost nothing per month, and has no installation fee. CenturyLink is also taking part in ConnectHome by offering Internet to HUD homes in Seattle for $10 a month for the first year, followed by $15 a month for the next four years.
"We realize, though, that providing an Internet connection is just one piece of the puzzle," says Erica Swanson, head of community impact at Google Fiber. "That’s why we’ll also partner with ConnectHome and local community groups to develop basic computer skills training and create computer labs to host these trainings in each of our Fiber markets."
This is sure to end dial up, but good that all can get internet. Though some education on how to use it will be needed.
