You don't need a Pokemon FC to trade with others, you just need their 3DS FC and then they get instantly added through the new PSS system and from there you're able to trade and do whatever you please, that's if you're talking about XY. If you mean for past generation games you look for your Pal Pad or something, there should be something that says 'Friend Code' and your 16-digit pops up.
