When Final Fantasy XIII hits stores in the U.S. next year, it will have been four years since the release of Final Fantasy XII. That's a long time in an industry that makes a habit of yearly franchise installments, but Square Enix producers Yoshi Kitase and Motomu Toriyama have told VG247 that the turnover will be a little quicker once FFXIII is complete.

"For FFXIII there are a lot of firsts, and because it's a new console that the teams are working on, it took a little time for the team to get used to everything," said Kitase and Toriyama through a translator. "Now that they have the engine built for it the basics are covered, so the development time for future projects should be shortened."

So in other words, it'll probably only take three years between installments instead of four. Incremental improvements, right?

Still, it looks like Square Enix is indeed serious about attaining a quicker turnover, as they've previously stated the development of Final Fantasy Versus XIII is already going "comparatively faster" than that of XIII.
