After 33 years in business, all Future Shop locations in Canada have been closed.

Purchased by Best Buy Canada in 2001 for $580 million, Future Shop still had 131 locations spread across Canada. At a 7 a.m. meeting this morning at each location, it was announced that all stores were closed effective immediately. Best Buy Canada will be remodeling 65 of the stores to become locations for its brand while the remaining 66 are closed permanently. As for the employees, 500 full-time employees were let go along with 1,000 part-timers.

This stinks since I prefer Future Shop over Best Buy here in Canada. Hopefully, the Future Shop closes to my home will be converted to a Best Buy otherwise I need to travel farther to buy my electronics from Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Super Store, Staples, and other places.

I think the main reason that Future Shop is not doing as well because a lot of people just buy their electronics offline from Wal-Mart, Super Store, Canadian Tire, Shoppers Drug Mart, and other places which offer better prices, and are more convenient since you can buy electronics while you also buy clothing, groceries, auto parts, and medicine at the pharmacy at Wal-Mart, Super Store, and Canadian Tire.

Plus, websites like eBay, Amazon, Newegg, TigerDirect, and NCIX also sell electronics, but for better prices making fewer people buy from Future Shop.

There is also less of a good reason to buy a new TV since most people have HDTVs, and other electronics like smartphones, tablets, game consoles, and PCs since a lot of older electronics, and computers are still good enough for tasks like browsing the web, watching video, and playing some PC games like League of Legends, Dota 2, and older Call of Duty Games.

ouch, that really sucks and can hurt a person. I hope they can land on their feet.

I read on a blog post that some of the Future Shop staff will get some compensation, or get hired at Bestbuy after some closed Future shop's gets converted to BestBuy.

I think, if you work in Future Shop's computer and laptop repair, and car stereo installer department, you can most likely find a job at BestBuy's Geeksquad, and other computer and electronics repair, installation, and troubleshooting places. The webmasters who maintain, and post online sales flyers on Future Shop's website may now work at Bestbuy Canada's website.

But, Future Shop workers who work in retail, cashier, and other less technical positions may have a harder time being re-hired by Bestbuy since their job's skills may not be as in demand as tech staff since it is harder to find good technical workers which are good at installing, fixing, troubleshooting, and upgrading computers, and other electronics,

Radio Shack Canada was sold to Circuit City in 2014 which renamed it The Source by Circuit City. In 2009, The Source later got bought by Bell Canada which is a phone, internet service provider, and TV company.

I don't think Radio Shack Canada, and Future shop are related, but most likely many of the older managers, staff, and executives who work in the electronics and computer retail stores probably worked at both companies at some time since there are not many electronics and computer stores in Canada which mostly sell electronics, computers, video games, movies, and music cds.

The investors who bought Futureshop, and Radio Shack shares in Canada most likely are the same people.
