Game-based Movies

Seeing as it was brought up by me in another thread and I feared we were getting way off topic there, I've decided to make this one.

A lot of games are being adapted into movies as the gaming industry becomes more popular. Hell, even board games are getting involved now with films like Battleship and - ugh - Monopoly.

So, obviously not all are going to be gems like the first Resident Evil or Silent Hill movies and many will be horribly way-off from their basic premise like the Super Mario Brothers movie.

What live-action movies are coming out that you are skeptical or looking forward to and what movies were cancelled or have not been made that you'd like to see adapted? I've played a lot of games where I beat them and went "Meh, the gameplay sucked but man this would have been a better movie than game!"

For me, Castlevania is still a movie I'd like to have seen been made since it was not based on Lord of Shadows. The Suffering could have been great if done right. Obviously, I'd like to see a Darkstalkers movie (and would actually go an apply to be in it no matter the cost).I'm looking forward to the Tomb Raider movie based on the reboot - especially if the voice artist they motion captured that played Lara is the star. She's an excellent physical and emotional actress. An actual Zelda movie would be great if they could pull it off properly. Remember Me had a nice Matrix-like vibe for film. And seeing Pokémon that look real - especially in a 3-D theater - would be great fun even if the movie sucks, wouldn't it?

Those are just my opinions, what are yours?

I've never understood how it is that movies and video games just can't seem to get their shit together and make good representations of the other. Like, games based on movies frequently seem to suck, and vise versa. I feel like these things should be way easier to pull off then say, a book to movie adaptation, where you'll likely have to cut the majority of the original story out to make a movie. Both being visual media should already have them set for success with a bit of a headstart...

The saddest thing I've seen as far as movies based on games go, is Namco's own movie based on Galerians. Galerians was an excellent mix of the anime Akitra and game System Shock for a story - so nothing too original - with gameplay resembling the original trilogy of Resident Evil-style games. The first one came out when the PSX died off in like 2000 and the second one, galerians: Ash, came out on the PS2 near launch. the movie named after the main character, Galerians: Rion, was just all of the CG FMV sequences ripped from the PS2 game and sent direct to BlockBuster Video, apparently. If you watched the movie you had no reason to play the games for yourself.

I'm curious, what games would you like to see made into a movie, Brunn?

Oh, btw, Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist was very good, made and endorsed by Capcom, and I was amazed when I saw one of the lead developers, composers and minds behind the SF series play as them-self in the movie. I won't ruin whom it was in case you want to try and spot them.

Personally I'd love to see Star Fox released as a movie, based on the N64 version. It basically plays as a movie itself, and a more fleshed out version would make for a fun, fast paced movie, in my opinion. But then too, I'm rather biased since Star Fox is my all time favorite game!

I'm particularly fond of fantasy games in general, so I'd like to see pretty much any fantasy game made into a movie. Every D&D movie seems to be absolutely awful, which just boggles my mind. They always seem to take some weird humor track with them, rather then doing them seriously. I'm having a hard time thinking of any specific games off the top of my head right now though, probably because I've been caught up a replay of Gauntlet: Dark Legacy on the Gamecube, and it would not make a good movie. At least, it'd be hard as hell to pull a good movie out of it.

I really enjoyed Starfox Adventure and agree it would be a great movie - especially for those furry-lovers who haven't had a blockbuster LA movie yet lol. Also, the third D&D movie was actually VERY good, I think, and it played out much like an actual campaign using prestige classes from 3.5 would. It was an online-only movie, so be sure to check it out if you haven't seen it!

I personally think Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon might make a good adaptation. Not really a series, more a Doctor Who style episodic show, since the game follows that formula quite well:

After all, if Luigi's Mansion 2 could be a good basis for a theoretical Doctor Who video game, then I think it could make a decent Doctor Who style TV show too.

I also think Professor Layton could work well too, although that's already made a (apparently decent) anime movie.

Squee, yes, I'd LOVE a Professor Layton movie! I'll have to look the existing one up, I bet it's great. There's also actually an Animal Crossing anime movie, that's pretty cute.

I don't know how it would work, but Smash Bros. would make a kick butt movie if done right.

The Mother series could be a good movie too... though Earthbound or Mother 3 would probably be more successful movie wise than Mother 1.

Also am I the only one that enjoys the Super Mario Brothers movie? Not as a Mario movie, but as a movie in general. I mean if you didn't know anything about Mario games, I think its pretty good.

I wouldn't mind seeing a movie based on Luigi's Mansion. I happen to love that series. But I agree with CM30. I think it would be good for a one off and not a series. There isn't enough material to make that into a series.

I'd have to disagree that Smash Brothers could make a good movie simply because that series doesn't really have much of a storyline to work with outside of "kid playing with his toys" like the first game had. No fighting game-turned-movie has worked out perfectly even when there was a story present in the series.

As for the Super Mario Brothers movie... Porkman and I had this discussion on Skype before. We both enjoy it partly because of how campy it is. To word it another way; it is so bad it is good. The sad thing is, my favorite part is no longer effectively funny. The bob-omb walking for a long time then right before it explodes you see "Reebok" on the feet was my favorite part because back then ads and product placements were very rare and typically only done for comedic effect and royalty-free. Most people wouldn't find the humor in it nowadays simply due to the fact that ads are more plentiful than the media you are playing or watching them on.
