Nintendo is well aware that it's fan base love to play Smash Bros with gamecube controller and to make them happy and make some more money, they have announced an adapter today which will hook up gamecube controllers to your Wii U. This will be used for the E3 tournament happening in 2 weeks but I'm sure it will come out in time for the new smash bros on Wii U.
When a release date and price are announced GF will bring you the news, till then enjoy E3 and hopefully we will know then.
The hate (though I love it) is too strong for Nintendo to make an adapter for the N64 controller. Though I would love to see one made for the SNES controller.
I play my Nintendo 64 and I also emulate it, and so I use the original controllers and the Adapter for PC for it.. but I doubt they would ever actually make any adapters for newer consoles with N64 in mind.. the controllers broke too easily and a lot of people had too much trouble using it. As for this adapter, yes.. yes please. Between Mario Kart 8 and the new super smash bros and this, it makes me happy and want a Wii U.
I hope that this is released soon. I would love to play smash bros with it. I also want to know if gamecube controller prices would be raised or stay the same, cause I kind of need one.
$20 is pretty expensive for an adapter which changes the Plug to make it work for the Wii U which look like it uses USB.
There are $2 PS2 controller plug to USB converter cables on eBay which converts the PS2 controller plug to a USB, so you can hook up your PS2 controller to a computer with USB ports to use the PS2 controller for playing emulators, and PC games with the PS2 controller with a $3 PS2 controller plug to USB converter cable.
The $29.99 Gamecube wired controller, and $19.99 Gamecube adaptor is pretty expensive.
There are Wireless Gamepad Controllers made for The Wii U which cost $35 like the Nyko Pro Commander which is $15 dollars cheaper than buying a Gamecube controller, and adaptor for it.

I feel an official Nintendo Gamecube wireless gamepad Wii U controller for $40 would be a better deal.
I am happy that Nintendo is thinking about the Melee veterans. Call me crazy but I prefer to use the Wiimote just because I got used to it in Brawl However, it's good that my friends that use the Gamecube controller will be able to use it in this Smash, otherwise I would have felt like if I had an unfair advantage because I can dominate the Wiimote and they can't.
