According to a survey conducted by GameStrata, North American videogamers spend, on average, more than $30,500 on games and gaming hardware each during the "peak gaming years" of 18-48. That's over $1,000 a year!

“With forecasters estimating this year’s sales will reach nearly $23 billion, it’s clear that gaming is the fastest-growing sector in the entertainment industry,â€￾ said Barry Dorf, COO of GameStrata. “The best part is that the trend doesn’t show any signs of slowing. In spite of predictions of a sluggish economy, gamers continue to invest their time and money into electronic entertainment.â€￾

I should keep track on how much I spend a year on video games.

more on this:

GameStrata today announced the results of a survey of "video game enthusiasts" in North America. The study shows that between the ages of 18 – 48, the average gamer spends over $30,500 on game software and hardware.

"With forecasters estimating this year's sales will reach nearly $23 billion, it's clear that gaming is the fastest-growing sector in the entertainment industry," said Barry Dorf, COO of GameStrata. "The best part is that the trend doesn't show any signs of slowing. In spite of predictions of a sluggish economy, gamers continue to invest their time and money into electronic entertainment."

The study goes on to demonstrate that there is a high correlation between the frequency of digital purchases and Xbox 360 ownership, with the vast majority of respondents saying they spend the majority of their gaming time online. 85 percent of respondents confirmed the purchase of a virtual good in the last month, with nearly 40 percent of the respondents saying that they play between 6-10 hours online per week

"The overwhelming majority of gamers are spending their time online with friends, building their reputation and online personas. Video games are becoming so much more than a momentary diversion; gaming is becoming yet another means of community building," said Dorf. "The survey results show that social networks need only adapt to the persistent and competitive elements of any genre to penetrate its user base ... the viability of future gaming centric social networks is very strong."

I'd believe that. Thinking back to the consoles I've bought (I started buying my own consoles when I was 16), I could definitely imagine spending a lot of money. If you think about people with monthly subscriptions (Xbox Live or MMORPGs) then that adds to it as well.

To date, I've bought (since I was 16):
Atari (bought on Ebay after mine broke)
Playstation (bought at launch full price)
PS2 x2 (bought first one at launch full price, bought second one a few years later for $150)
NES (bought on Ebay after mine broke)
N64 (bought at a yard sale after mine broke)
Gamecube x2 (bought first one at launch full price, bought second one when my ex left for $75)
Wii (bought at launch full price)
GBA (bought the special Spongebob toys r us one for Nathan full price)
GBA Micro (bought at launch of the special anniversary edition full price)
DS (bought at launch, full price)
DS Lite (bought at launch, full price)
PSP (bought at launch, full price)
Leapster (for Nathan)
Xbox (at launch, full price...my ex took it when he left)
And tons of games, extra controllers, memory cards, and other accessories.

So considering that's within the past 10 years....yeah, I can see spending all that money.
