The proliferation of lower-priced tablets and their growing capability is accelerating the shift from PCs to tablets. "While there will be some individuals who retain both a personal PC and a tablet, especially those who use either or both for work and play, most will be satisfied with the experience they get from a tablet as their main computing device," said Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner. "As consumers shift their time away from their PC to tablets and smartphones, they will no longer see their PC as a device that they need to replace on a regular basis."

Smartphones like the iPhone, and Nexus 4, and tablets like the iPads, Google Android Tablets, and the Windows 8 Surface Pro or RT would be good enough for most people who only use a few programs like web browsers, photo viewers, e-mail, and social networking to look up information, and chat with others.

I think that portable desktops and laptops like nettops and netbooks without CD/DVD drives will still be popular because you can easily buy them for 300 US dollars or less, and they are good enough for everyday tasks like watching online video, and even HD video if they have a newer onboard video card like Intel HD 4000, or a AMD APU video card.
