In a sit-down with Making Of, producer, Wyck Godfrey (The Twilight Saga, AVP, I, Robot) provided some insight into the upcoming Gears of War film. Discussing what may be a major revelation about the film, Godfrey suggests that it will be a prequel of sorts to the story of the video game series.

He wants the film to be, as he describes, "impactful and immediate." The film will apparently begin on earth-like planet of Sera, as it will initially be depicted as "running well" (his words,) presumably in a time of peace and prosperity. However, what we will see of Sera will not last long. The story will start just before "Emergence Day," the defining event in the Gears mythos (14 years before GOW1 takes place,) when the savage race of baddies, the Locust Horde rise from their subterranean homes to destroy the top-dwellers. Godfrey states that he wants the film to depict a "48 hour period" after the big event hits on Emergence Day, where people are scrambling to survive the initial onslaught.

Wanting to avoid the huge task of covering the entire epic story of the alien planet of Sera and its history, (Pendulum Wars, discovery of Imulsion, formation of the COGs, etc.) Godfrey evokes the name, Cloverfield, to give a more accurate idea of the type of film this will likely become -- namely, a survival film. Should that (and basically the whole prequel idea) actually be the case, fans may want to think twice about dream-casting actors for the roles of Baird and Cole. This will probably be a more tight-knit cast where, at best, we get to see Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago form their initial bond while on the run from the first waves of the Locust Horde and help the once obscure COG become a Marshall Law government that is Sera's last hope.
