seriously, whats with the whole don't ask don't tell thing with the US military being a big debate. who cares if our men/women in service are gay? If your willing to service in the army of this slowly rotting country then you should be able to serve in the military without any problems.

Multiple reasons behind this. For one reason they don't want the other soldiers to be like scared or something. Yes it seems wimpy that THEY would be, but they also may not like gay people. Yes, to most of us that's wrong and we'll complain something like this, "SCREW THEM. There is nothing wrong with gay people!". Okay, yes, we think that, but not everybody has to think like that. Another reason is it may disrupt training, or potentially even in war.

They also train you to not get distracted during war and focus on the task. If you get distracted by someone being a homosexual then you clearly aren't cut out for war.
What if they are literally distracting you? And besides, what if someone thinks you are gay, like them, but you aren't? That would be awkward if you worked with the person.

I agree, I think that it is because many idiots still believe that homosexuality is contagious and that homosexuals want to have sex with anyone that they see. These people don't believe in common sense. If Heterosexuals don't walk around wanting to have sex with anyone they see, then why would they think so when it comes to Homosexuals?

That being said, I believe that if Gays have to adhere to a DADT policy, then so should Straights. If Gays can get kicked out for discussing their sex lives with other soldiers, then so should Straights. Anything less is discrimination.

@Dynastygal That's why this rule is in affect. That way no one knows if your gay or straight.

@Black Angel That's how some people think. We can't say they are wrong, because in their eyes, we are wrong. We will basically be ignorant if we think they are wrong and we are right because that's basically saying no one but people who think this way is right.

The rule is only for gays. There's no mention of straight.
Nobody really mentions there sexual orientation anyways. Your not supposed to, for it may interrupt. It's more known that only gays can't, but you can't really stated your orientation anyways.

I think they failed on the psychology side of this a lot. But I do want a clear reason why this is a big deal.
It's very hard to train your psych, because people can react differently. Everybody is different, so it's near impossible to have the same outcome.

And the reason this is such a big deal is, they don't want soldiers to get distracted probably. They don't want you to have any sexual orientation in the army; your gay, your straight, doesn't matter. Do your work, fight for your country, die honorably, die doing what you wanted. That's what they want.

@GracefulAssassin: What you said earlier about being distracted by some kind of public display by a gay person on the battlefield is rather odd for a number of reasons.

a) I imagine they will be too busy dealing with the combat situation to perform some kind of public action
B) I think I would be much more aware of bullets and bombs flying somewhere than of a gay person doing something distracting
c) I honestly can't think of anything they could do that would distract me

@Above If you're going to openly act stupid(not just acting gay, trust me, I am a fairly obviously gay man) in the middle of a war zone, you deserve to be shot. If it disrupts the troop at all, it shouldn't happen. On one end, yeah, I wanna be able to see gay people be able to be open about it and be in the military, but I don't think that society is mature enough for that yet.

I agree with you. I don't think people should feel repressed at all due to an aspect of their personality whether it be religion,past-times, sexuality being considered "unusual" by anyone. I was just saying that I feel I would have more pressing issues on my hand in a battlefield to notice some kind of public display that GracefulAssassin was referring to
