God of War: Ascension

Remember Kratos? Since the first God of War game came out on the PlayStation 2 almost 8 years ago, the Ghost of Sparta has cut his way through armies, gods, titans⦠and into our hearts. The title that was released in 2010 was initially believed to be the final chapter of Kratos' violent (and ever so satisfying) tale, but since then we have learned that this isn't actually the case at all. A new God of War game is coming, and soon.

A prequel to the events of the series' prior releases, God of War: Ascension will provide gamers with a glimpse of Kratos' earlier years, namely the ones following the death of his family at his own hands. For those who're familiar with his usual angry, rage filled, pissed off demeanor, Ascension will grant an alternative look at a familiar face. Gamers will see a different side of Kratos, as scenes will be present depicting him not just as a relentless killing machine but also as a dutiful father and a man with emotions and vulnerabilities.

But just as important as the story being told, will be the environment in which it is presented. Ascension comes bearing astonishing visuals that rival even those of God of War III, which by all accounts was regarded as an aesthetic masterpiece. GoW 3's impressive cinematics and massively scaled battle scenes will also be built upon in the new title, staying true to the series' theme of creating an epic backdrop as gamers slice and dice their way through the opposition.

Speaking of slicing and dicing, Sony Santa Monica is making sure things stay fresh in terms of how players will be dismembering their enemies. Gamers will find themselves utilizing some new moves, as well as the ability to pick up weapons during combat-ÃÂ with their newly acquired tools in hand players will get to either add them to their inventories or they could just throw them at adversaries for bonus damage as well as some style points.

Sliding down walls, players will find now themselves able to actually steer and switch directions (a welcome change), and the game will also feature sequences in which players will dodge obstacles while sliding full speed down sloping surfaces. And while I'm on the subject of new innovations⦠the new God of War title will be the first to utilize a multiplayer mode. The multiplayer will accommodate up to 8 players at a time, offering its own unique storyline to help keep things interesting. There will even be co-op, for those players who wish to take on challenges with a friend at their side. Regardless of if you're looking for the new features, or if you're coming back for more of the classic God of War action you've come to expect...

You can rest assured that once again, Kratos will not disappoint.

God of War: Ascension is due out on March 12th, 2013.
