Electronic Arts today announced it is all eliminating paper game manuals and reducing printed materials in its packaged products by 40 percent. The publisher says this initiative will apply to all PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC games worldwide going forward.

The paper game manuals will be replaced with "easily-accessible" on-disc manuals available through the options menu. "This will allow players to conveniently view instructional information on the fly as they play," EA says. Digital manuals can also be viewed online and downloaded at http://support.ea.com/app/manuals.

"EA is committed to a healthy and sustainable environment," said John Schappert, Chief Operating Officer at Electronic Arts. "We are reducing packaging materials, eliminating printed manuals and increasing the availability of digital content at EA.com."

EA is also implementing new Reduced Material DVD Style Cases (RMCs) for PS3, Wii, Xbox 360, and PC-DVD retail products. IGN asked EA how much money this initiative would save the company. A representative was unable to comment on the financial impact.

Publisher Ubisoft began removing paper manuals from its games last April.

meh, another reason to hate EA.

Maybe a good choice for the environment, but I think if something were to happen to the game disk, players may have trouble recalling ways to play it.

EA can make PDF versions of the Game manuals for players to download via the internet, and let owners print them out with their computer's printer, or use an Ipad, Amazon Kindle, or Laptop to read the PDF manual.

Who the hell reads the manuals anyway? lol And this is just one less thing to have a complete game set. :D And it's very good for the environment. Ubisoft said 1,000 game manuals is 13 trees! D:

Well I am completely selfish here in saying that I personally love having a big thick game manual in the box to have a peruse through, especially if it contains some story background and character information etc. I mean I loved the manual that came with Mount and Blade as you could practically beat goats to death with it and I was decidedly disappointed by the Call of Duty manuals which were only about 5 pages long.

I don't read the manual, but I do like admiring the artwork inside the manual.

I wonder if this will affect printed strategy guides/Walkthroughs which gamestore sells for the most obsessed gamers which must get every single items and do every sidequest in a game by reading a walkthrough magazine/books with a guide on how to finish the game entirely.

I hope this means there is a price drop for EA games by a few cents to dollars since without the manual, I feel I'm getting less for my money if I still pay 60 dollars for games without the guide book which is worth a few cents to a few dollars depending on how much paper, ink, and the quality of the paper used for the manual.

If EA, keeps this up, pretty soon we have Game boxes made of Recycled Paper instead of the more durable plastic DVD boxes.

The point of paying $60 is for the game, not the manual... And i doubt that would happen. I know no one that likes those. >_>

I must admit, you do pay the £40-£45 for the game but you do feel somewhat cheated when there isn't that manula included. I just feel it is a nice addition to the game.
