After buying in-game advertising firm AdScape for 23 million dollars last February, Google is testing ways to deliver you ads in computer games.

Google has been expanding its empire into newspaper, radio, smart phones and videogames, and advertising in games is considered a great marketing tool since messages can be tailored to precise demographic groups and players focus on game scenes, remembering what they see there.

"We think this rich environment is a perfect medium to deliver relevant, targeted advertising that ultimately benefits the user, the video game publisher and the advertiser," a Google rep said. "We are currently in tests to determine the best approach to in-game advertising."

So some dude playing a shooter game could be hunting for bad guys and find one hiding behind a Snickers vending machine, hiding in a McDonalds, and perched sniper-style behind a billboard for Coke.

And since many games are played on consoles or computers linked to the Internet, ads can be changed or updated. But don’t worry, they won’t screw up your game…unless you consider being inundated with crappy ads during your gameplay to be distracting.

Website GigaOm says Google will launch a version of this ad platform with a computer game as soon as next month.

I think this is a way for Google to go after folks interested in gaming, or want to get involved in the gaming business.
