Google Search Tests Long Search Bar Variations

Google is testing a longer search bar, so I guess you can enter in a longer query into the search box. Google is also testing it in a gray color and other variations.

Here is the normal search bar - yesterday (hence the July 4th header):



Compare that to the longer search bar with a gray background filler:

I think a longer search bar is a nice addition and I hope Google actually rolls it out.

This is basically just for aesthetics because if I were to search for something, there's no guarantee it would find what I am searching for. For example, song lyrics.

Why is it not set to scale of a person's screen?

I feel a long search box would be useful for people who search for longer text like a long quote from a book.

I wonder if a long search box could slowdown website loading times for people on slower internet connections and older computers.
