TOYMAKER FOR THE WELL HEELED Apple will lose its tablet market share crown by 2015, according to IDC.
IDC's figures confirm Apple's number one standing in the tablet market in 2011, however thanks primarily to Amazon's Kindle, Android based tablets significantly closed the gap with Apple. IDC's figures put Apple's tablet market share at 54.7 per cent while Android devices accounted for 44.6 per cent, however the firm believes the tables will be turned in 2015.

Tom Mainelli, research director for Mobile Connected Devices at IDC said, "As the sole vendor shipping IOS products, Apple will remain dominant in terms of worldwide vendor unit shipments. However, the sheer number of vendors shipping low-priced, Android-based tablets means that Google's OS will overtake Apple's in terms of worldwide market share by 2015. We expect IOS to remain the revenue market share leader through the end of our 2016 forecast period and beyond."

Although Google's Android operating system will eventually overtake Apple's IOS, not only will it take years, but it is likely that Apple won't care too much anyway. As Mainelli alluded, the leapfrogging will happen due to low price Android tablets that have wafer thin margins, a market that Apple isn't particularly keen to move into.

From Google's point of view this is still generally good news, however, as it makes next to nothing from Android directly. However its business plan around Android hinges on market share, allowing it to push services such as email, navigation and social networking applications, all of which carry advertising. µ

Cool, but 2015 is 3 years away. I wonder would it be sooner then 2015 since more people can afford phones, tablets, and PCs with the Google Android operating system since Google Android devices are usually a lot cheaper.

Wonder how long it will take Android to beat Windows operating system since Windows 8, and Windows Phone 7 don't look as simple to use as older version versions of Windows and other simpler operating systems.
