so I was browsing deviantART and all of sudden a pop up box appeared saying my browsers was out of date and need to be updated. afterwords my browser close it's self o.0 and the box that pop up looked like it didn't belong to firefox.

So anyone know what might have happened or did I get browser jacked? I also ran my anti virus and spysweeper (which they both found nothing) before touching firefox again and when I opened it up nothing was different and I was back on the same DA page.

Very weird. It could be just an ad which crashed firefox. To be safe, you can scan with http://www.malwarebytes.org/ and see if it finds anything. It is free and It works pretty well.

It's likely the site mistook your updated browser for a older version one because the script or program on the site/server knows little or nothing about it. Try to ask the webmasters of the site to correct it. But before doing so, you might want to disable your addons and go to the site again. Sometimes an addon can cause a site to crash.

downloaded it and ran it and it found one thing and I got rid of the malware. I like to keep this program but every time my computer restarts or I click on it my screen dims and a box appears asking if this program can change a setting on my computer or something like that. Know how to make that pop box not show up as I can't see anything to make it not appear? (I think it might have something to do with user account control)

I've been reading posts about DA becoming full of stuff that is messing with people. It wasn't my addons as I've been using the same ones for a year now and have yet to have any problems with DA with them on.

This video is pretty good at turning off UAC in Windows. I never found UAC very helpful. If you know that your files don't contain viruses, and you have a good antispyware, firewall, and antivirus with an active shield.

Nope, UAC is basicly for newbies or paranoid people who click and download random files off the internet which will infect a computer, but if you have a strong antivirus, antispyware, firewall and practice good computer security skills like only downloading from trusted sources like download.com sorceforge, and other safe sites you should be alright.

Plus, UAC is more for protecting Internet Explorer users from getting infected by a weird toolbar, addon, or activeX when randomly browsing onto unsafe websites and opening unsafe e-mails with IE viruses.

Incorrect UAC is more of a windows version of sudo used in mac, linux, and others. It is meant to make sure nothing can get into your programs without permission. For instance you need admin power to edit or add programs into the "windows" folder. If a email with a virus tried to add itself it would ask you for your password. Which then you can go hey wait I didn't move anything and click declined. Saving yourself from a virus.

Very good points! Using a regular or guest level account also helps at preventing viruses and malware since regular users by default can't install, or run certain files in Windows. I don't mind the root password pop-up dialog box for Ubuntu since I rarely install or do admin level tasks in Ubuntu. I just mainly use Ubuntu to type docs, firefox, and explore my Windows drive when windows locked a file I can't delete with Explorer.

I just hate how UAC makes me click "OK" or "RUN" everytime I do a disk defrag, clean up, open MSconfig, Scan my PC for spyware, do a registry cleanup, and so on. Plus, I need to restart my PC if I want to disable it while I do my scans.

I been using Window XP and older Win OS which does not have UAC, and my computers are free of most viruses and spyware according to malwarebytes, spybot, Avast ,A-squared, Task Manager (manually finding out which tasks does what by checking up the process with Google) and SuperAntiSpyware and don't read or open e-mail I am not expecting. I just open e-mails from friends, forums or school. Gmail ,Ymail also block images and other file types which can contain viruses unless you enable images. G-mail scans attachments and e-mails for viruses with its built-in virus scanner.

I use http://www.system-protect.com/ , Comodo Firewall Defense+ Sandbox and http://sandboxie.com to protect my operating system and files from viruses, and malware along with SuperAntiSpyware, and Avast 5. It has not failed me yet on Windows 7. It uses a lot more resources then UAC, but it annoys me less.

UAC is useful to prevent others (even children) from adjusting your computer's global settings, even malware can hijack/change your settings too. When UAC pops up, you'll know whether you intended to change something or otherwise. It's not recommended to disable UAC, which makes you unaware of unintentional changes to your computer settings.

Another alternative is to block the malware program with your firewall so that you can remove it later.

I agree it is not recommended to disable UAC with kids on your .

I find Comodo Firewall Defense+ & Sandbox is better designed since it can remember which things to let through and which programs to block. If you run a unknown program which is not in Comodo Database of safe programs it is automatically sandboxed. I find the documentation and notifications more useful then UAC for Vista, and 7.

Spybot Search and Destroy Teatimer is also pretty useful.

This video explains Comodo Defense+ & Sandbox very well!
