I'm not a fan, I just watch some series, and even those, just occasionally, when I have some time to waste. The members of my forums got me into watching anime by suggesting me some of the series they like. :wallbash:
I started with Naruto years ago. Back then I didn't really like anime. The fighting and storyline got me interested in Naruto but I had the "can't-watch-any-other-anime-other-than-Naruto" disease. I think you know the saying. I'm not sure how but I decided to check out Death Note one day. It changed my view of anime and from that date, I couldn't stop watching anime.
So I'd say Death Note got me into anime. Naruto was just something I saw on TV that got my attention.
As a kid, I did not count the dub anime from toonami as anime since to me was like watching cartoons and not thinking about the country of origin at the time. I think my first legit subbed anime was Initial D since I was way into cars followed by Prince of Tennis Series.
I started off by watching Attack on Titans, which two of my best friends recommended to me. Although it was a pretty morbid anime to start off with, I grew interested in watching more. I then proceeded to binge watch Fate Zero and Sword Art Online in four days, accompanied by a great deal of coffee and the occasional mint chocolate chip ice cream. Soon after I finished these series, I realized that I was officially hooked on anime in general.
Probably Death Note. My brother was watching it and I just sat with him without understanding wtf was going on , but then I found myself hooked in and attracted to the characters, their personalities, their motives, etc.. So I decided to watch it from the beginning, and again, and again lol. Until I realized I could spend that time discovering new anime series, so I found Hunter x Hunter (which I watched during my childhood, so it's natural I start with this one), then FMA and FMAB, and so on and so forth. I only started watching seasonally though when Attack on Titan came.
Also I've been watching Naruto during this whole period too. Even before death note, but I don't consider it my 'starting point' because I was also just sitting with my brother wasting time when I was bored.
I started watching anime back in the early 80's. G-Force / Science Ninja Team Gatchaman was the first anime show to truly draw me in, even though I didn't realize it was anime at the time. A few years later Robotech (part of the Macross series) started airing on television and I was completely blown away. I was a little older now and I realized that this show was animated in Japan by viewing the credits. Already a huge fan of Japanese arcade games, I gradually started reading up more and immersing myself in the anime and manga subculture.
What got me into anime was interestingly enough Sonic X. When I first saw it on TV, I didn't even know it was an anime. I loved it so much that I did insane amount of research about it. That eventually led me to try find the fourth season (which didn't exist) or shows involving Sonic which led me to finding other anime that could be similar to it. Eventually, I started watching all kinds like Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, etc.
I got into it in around 2008 when I watched Azumanga just to see what it was like and turns out I ended up enjoying it. I had seen and heard lots of references to it in different places and one of my brothers friends recommended it to me so I gave it a try.
I think before that though I read a few of the Yotsuba mangas
