Okay, this is pretty messed up:

Apparently they sent investigators to the doors of the people developing the mods that allow players to use unofficial services and tried to threaten them into shutting down because it 'incentivised piracy' or something.

But thoughts? Personally, I find it kind of sketchy, and while I do see their point somewhat (unofficial servers can theoretically let players go online with 'pirated' copies of the game), it seems a lot like the microtransactions in the online game might have been the cause. Can't let people have fun without paying extra money for in game items, right?
