Bungie is still down, the site works, but people who were not logged in at the time can't log in. Many believe that expert hackers breached Bungie's highly secure firewalls and proxys.
Luckily Bungie (or Bnet as it's affectionately called) has many measures in place to protect personal data, such as members IP addresses, moderators passwords, and other private info.
Many people are complaining of problems with the site's HTML and JavaScript.
I, luckily, was logged in at the time, so when the site was 'hacked' I was in a front row seat to watch the horror unfold as all member's posting was disabled.
Many members (including me) were still able to privately message or 'pm' each other.
I talked to a friend of mine, who is in the New Flood (a Bnet offshoot), and he told me that the reason B.net was down was because NF was sending DDoS attacks to B.Net.
When the site 'came back' even the Forum Ninjas (mods) and Elders (employees) were complaining of site troubles. Not knowing where the attack started, Bnet is on a state of heightened alert.
To calm the rumors, Master Forum Ninja Achranos claims: QUOTE Load balancer hardware failure, not a DDOS attack. We're working on it, but no ETA. Expect the site to be up and down until it is sorted out.

QUOTE Although, Moderators or employees (fatass luke and axman "gorilla suit" tom included) are not "godly" and play more politics than you might think. They wouldn't admit to a small time hacking after the last one. Especially since the NF decided not to create any collateral.
Updates will be posted regularly.
8/24/08 - 7:15 pm: Site crashed again, members were expectant of this aftershock in thread postings.
8/24/08 - 7:55 pm: Appears to be back to normal, can't be too sure though....
8/25/08 - 2:33 pm: Adding to claims of "Hardware Failure", bnet says they'll be on and off for the next week or so, sure.....
