Bungie and Microsoft gave us our first look at Halo: Reach, via the Spike VGA Awards show. Though no actual gameplay was shown, the trailer did feature in-engine graphics and the first look at what is supposedly Planet Reach. Here are some quick takeaways based on my initial viewing.

The trailer opened with a Spartan putting on his helmet before showcasing a Warthog rolling along a trail on the ground of what we believe to be Reach. Several new characters are introduced, sans helmets, including a female Spartan with a bionic arm. She asks the commander if he thinks there are any survivors, to which he responds, "Spartans never die, they're just missing in action."

Intriguingly, the commander also says the line, "No more of that lone wolf stuff," a quote that would seem to indicate that Halo: Reach will not have a single main hero along the lines of Master Chief in the earlier Halo games. Towards the end of the trailer, somebody asks if this is the "new #6," which might also indicate a more squad-focused style of gameplay.

Featured in the trailer are several vehicles common to the Halo world, including the aforementioned Warthog as well as what looks like the Hornet helicopter. Names are not given to most of the characters shown, aside from one Spartan named George-052. None of the Noble Team Spartans in the trailer are wearing the same armor as Master Chief, which could indicate a new, special experimental armor is being introduced. Planet Reach is a center of research in the Halo universe and the home to the Spartan project, so anything is possible.

The trailer ends with a closeup of an old enemy, the Elite, who snarls as he extends an energy sword.
