Regardless of how you feel about the 3D boom happening at the moment, there’s no denying that it is just getting started. As a recent study conducted by Nielsen and the Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing found, interest in 3D, specifically 3D televisions in the home, is definitely on the upswing, especially among…hardcore gamers?

According to the study, the cost of 3DTVs and the relevant equipment will, obviously, be the primary deterrent for a lot of consumers, and yet when asked about the 3D experience, the responses were mostly positive. For instance, the study found that 57 percent of people felt like 3D made them “part of the action, and 48 percent felt more engaged with whatever they were watching.

But perhaps the most noteworthy finding was this one: “42% of respondents cited interest in playing video games in 3D, with seven-out-of-ten (71%) hardcore or regular gamers interested in 3D video games.”

Those figures might seem a bit high, but then again, even though gamers might say they’d be interested in 3D gaming, there’s a good chance the majority of them won’t actually adopt the technology for a few years, because of the associated costs (and the fact that wearing glasses to play games for hours on end is hardly an appealing proposition). This is why Nintendo seems to really be onto something with the Nintendo 3DS, even if it's on a less dramatic, handheld scale.

I won't be begging for 3D.
