I just adore this anime. Maybe because I was warned not to expect battles against monsters by schoolkids with super powers. I wasn't much for the love story or the character of Haruhi herself, but I wasn't put off by how central and technically overly-superpowered she was because I got this general sense that this was a slice-of-life anime disguised as a schoolkids-with-superpowers anime, and I appreciated that subversion.

Whatever advanced science or philosophy they throw at you has any potential for perceived pretentiousness undercut by the most well-timed and bizarrely entertaining fun things.

And I have to admit: I enjoyed the endless eight arc. That's how much this anime had caught me.

Any other Haruhiists out there?

I liked "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" but had not interest in continuing to see the other stuff in the series. I was satisfied with what I had watched. Actually, I kind of like the other Haruhi better, the one from Ouran High School Host Club that came out around the same time. Haruhi Suzumiya was interesting, though.

I liked the anime but the part where it kept repeating the episodes for 7-8 times was just too much for me. I mean, why would you keep repeating episodes, it's just so boring!

Haruhi must be a common name in Japan. Have you watched The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya? Nagato plays a big part with a variety of expressions (not a typo) which makes me happy because she's my favorite character! :)

It was an absurdly exaggerated development on the slice-of-life with existential philosophy shtick that they had. If this anime is a celebration of daily life, then what's more daily life than routine? That, and the mystery of why every day is repeating. If it was only three episodes, the suspense and frustration wouldn't have been as well built-up. Okay, maybe five would have been enough. But they animated each of those repeating episodes from scratch, with so much attention to detail! I can appreciate just watching to catch those. It's like a meditation, or a strangely mundane recurring dream.

That said, for those who weren't warned and didn't appreciate the boring cul-de-sac...yeah, that's time in your life that you're not getting back!

I'm not a very big fan of the second season, but I did enjoy the first season quite a bit. I think I rated it 3/5  (to me, that's good, but nothing spectacular or remarkable) but even though I didn't like it a whole lot... I have this strong desire to rewatch the show, and I will. After my 6 month break that is... It's not good enough for me to spend money on it though, but it's an interesting show.

I feel like it's fairly overrated though, I mean... I don't really find it to be one of the best shows ever, and there are surely much better SoL shows out there if you ask me. The anime also feels too short, I mean, they barely get anywhere at all, and all we get to see is a ton of SoL stuff. Yeah, it IS a Slice of Life show, but there are so many books... I highly doubt that all those books contain this much slice of life. Even if they do, there are so many books (is the book-series even finished yet?...) for some story development to happen, that it doesn't matter if they have tons of SoL in those aswell. What I mean is, if they only intended to do two seasons, they should have tried to flesh in some more story driving content, and less weird-shit (endless eight + other weird stuff...).

Oh well, it is very much possible that the anime for Haruhi Suzumiya was ONLY made to advertise the books. If that was the case, it was very sucessful with doing that. I mean seriously, just go to some random anime community and look at all those people who bought the haruhi books. Everyone loves haruhi, everyone wants to know what happens next, and everyone buys the books.

There are people who claim that all anime is made to advertise the source material/merchandise/etc, but I strongly disagree with such claims, simply because anime is a medium in itself, that gains revenune on it's own, and it has it's own fanbase. With that being said, there are tons of shows which are made only as advertisement, even if they offer enjoyment to the viewer. And it wouldn't be surprising if the reason that we don't see any third season of Haruhi, is that the author of the books want it this way.

This is one of the very few anime I could not finish watching, the plot completely bored me to tears.

Aww, yeah that would be too bad to only use the anime as a very long advertisement. Manga is great, and adaptations would change or condense some things, but the anime should be able to stand on its own. That said, for an advertisement, the animators clearly put a lot of care into every detail.

It's more thematic than plot, yes. I was lucky to be introduced to it by a friend who got it through not to expect too much in the way of action, so I could relax and appreciate the out-of-order puzzle piece aspect, and the pretty animation, and the one-off hijinks, nudge-winks to science and brushes with philosophy 101, and all that. If I hadn't been warned, I'd probably cry boredom and give up on it too!

This is actually the second anime I ever watched when I started a list of anime with my friend. It has a bit of a slow start, but the plot is so so soooo good, but it's hard to talk about anything without spoiling it. Season 2 however, was awful. I get what they were going for, but showing the same thing for more than 8 episodes is pushing your luck. Especially since my friend and I only had time to watch an episode after school, it got really annoying. When I rewatch this, I'm either going to skip the Endless Summer arc, or I'll just binge it and get it over with.
