Thanks to a spy over at the AVS Forum, we now have photographic evidence that WalMart will be selling the Toshiba HD-A2 HD-DVD player for the low, low price of $198. Now given, this is not the high end model, and can only output in 1080i, not 1080p, but not everyone has a set that can handle 1080p, so this is the perfect HD format upgrade for those people.
With this new price point, HD-DVD might be taking the lead in the format wars. The PS3 has been pimping itself as a home entertainment unit which plays Bluray discs and up-reses your standard DVDs. But with this new Walmart deal, and the fact that this player plays HD-DVDs as we as up-reses your standard DVDs, people who don't care about video games are going to be tempted to enter into the HD era. In fact, we might just be in line on saturday to pick one of these up (the rumor is that each store will only get 18 units to sell at first).
Now, let the PS3/Bluray fan boy screaming begin.
