The HDMI Forum's newest HDMI cable and connection standard, announced here today at CES 2025, is significantly faster than the previous version, HDMI 2.1b, with support for much higher resolutions, framerates, and color depths.

HDMI 2.2 can transfer data at up to 96Gbps between compatible devices, double the speed of HDMI 2.1b (48Gbps). The higher bandwidth means HDMI 2.2 connections can reach up to 12K resolution (12,288 by 6,480 pixels, or 80MP in camera terms) at up to 120 frames per second, when HDMI 2.1b can only handle up to 8K60 or 4K120 signals.

A new feature has also been added to the specification, a Latency Indication Protocol (LIP) that assists in synchronizing audio and video signals between devices.

To get the full 96Gbps connection and all features HDMI 2.2 supports, you'll need new cables as well as sources, screens, and sound systems. Current HDMI cables only support speeds up to 48Gbps to match HDMI 2.1b, and many are significantly slower.

The new standard includes a specification for new 96Gbps HDMI cables, which will be verified and labeled by the HDMI Forum as Ultra96. Because the HDMI connector hasn't changed since the sub-5Gbps speeds of HDMI 1.0, users will need to check that certification through an identifying QR code on every official Ultra96 cable.

Consumers shouldn't worry about replacing their devices or cables, though. The full specs for the standard won't be completely released until mid-2025, and even after that it could take several months to a year before HDMI 2.2 devices are available.

Nice. RTX 5080 supports HDMI 2.1b but I'll use the Display Port 2.1b output of the card.
