Cavill spoke about Argylle with director Matthew Vaugh, when the latter went on a tangent about the importance of good cast rapport in directing difficult scenes. He then admitted he doesn't really see the point of including sex scenes in movies, to which Cavill responded, "I also don't understand them. I'm not a fan." The comment is telling of the actor's choice of roles as of late, although his television credits include his portrayal of Charles Brandon in The Tudors, where Cavil's character was intertwined with multiple love interests. The actor revealed in 2015 that he had to "apologize profusely" for being overwhelmed by a sex scene while filming for an episode, saying, "It's only happened to me once, and it was very embarrassing."
Cavill says sex scenes are effective if they are intrinsic to the plot of movies. "I think there are circumstances where a sex scene actually is beneficial to a movie rather than just the audience," he asserted, "I think sometimes they're overused these days. It's when you have a sense that you're going 'Is this really necessary? Or is it just people with less clothing on?' and that's where you start to get more uncomfortable and you're thinking 'There's not a performance here, there's not a piece which is gonna carry through into the rest of the movie.'"
"Most of the time, the human imagination is gonna trump [sexually suggestive scenes]," Cavill added. "And so I think it can be a little bit of a copout if a TV show or a movie is just filled with gyrating bodies, and you're going 'Okay? But what is this doing for us?' Apart from the idea of like, 'Ooo, naked person, great.'"
