It’s to be expected you’ll run into a few driver incompatibilities and unsupported hardware and software, but what can sometimes catch you off guard is when entire features are dropped from the core operating system.

Probably the biggest cut is Windows Media Center, but it’s not the only thing getting the boot. From Microsoft’s Windows 10 specification page:

Feature deprecation section
  • If you have Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 8 Pro with Media Center, or Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center and you install Windows 10, Windows Media Center will be removed.
  • Watching DVDs requires separate playback software
  • Windows 7 desktop gadgets will be removed as part of installing Windows 10.
  • Windows 10 Home users will have updates from Windows Update automatically available. Windows 10 Pro and Windows 10 Enterprise users will have the ability to defer updates.
  • Solitaire, Minesweeper, and Hearts Games that come pre-installed on Windows 7 will be removed as part of installing the Windows 10 upgrade. Microsoft has released our version of Solitaire and Minesweeper called the “Microsoft Solitaire Collection” and “Microsoft Minesweeper.”
  • If you have a USB floppy drive, you will need to download the latest driver from Windows Update or from the manufacturer’s website.
  • If you have Windows Live Essentials installed on your system, the OneDrive application is removed and replaced with the inbox version of OneDrive.

I'm disappointed that Media Center, and DVD playback are removed since I still have a lot of DVD movies which I may want to watch on my PC with a 5.1 surround sound speaker system. I also own a TV tuner card which can use Windows Media Center for watching TV from my Cable TV provider or over the air Antennae.

A lot of classic gamers who play Solitaire, Minesweeper, and Hearts Games in Windows maybe disapointed that it is unavailable from Windows 10.

Goodness, Windows 10 sounds like crap. I will stick to my windows 7.
I pick Windows 7  over 10 as well since there are a lot of useful features like DVD movie playback, and Media Center which are missing from 10, but exist in 7.

Plus, 7 is backwards compatible with more older PC games, programs, and still seems to be the best OS for playing both new, and some old PC Games.

I read online that some games have mouse slowdown problems when you play some PC games in Windows 8.

The USB Floppy drive needing extra driver software download and install in Windows 10 could be a big problem with Windows 10 users who still have a files, programs, games, etc stored on Floppy drives since those USB Floppy drive software drivers are harder to find online these days because the websites which host the files may have deleted the USB Driver software from their website, or the driver is not compatible with Windows 10.

It kind of stinks so many features are being removed from Windows 10.

yikes, where to start with this?

Media Center, major bummer for me.

DVD can be fixed with a codec.

what is w7 desktop gadgets exactly?

so W10 users have to auto update and can't change that?

who still uses floppys?

Removing Solitaire, Minesweeper, and Hearts? Is MS insane?

It's very important to note that the vast majority of these are been replaced by newer versions of them which are basically more modern and not just ported from OS to OS. They are a re-branded app that basically functions the same so I don't see it as much of an issue.

stuff like that tends to turn out to be crap.

DVD can be fixed with a codec, but I notice some DVD movies I played don't work very well on alternative video players, and codecs, but work  in Media Center.

Yes, It sounds like Windows Update will be force to auto-update Windows according to the article.

Desktop Gadgets are those tiny programs like a clock, calendar, which run on the Desktop's wallpaper/background.

I think some old people still use Floppy drives, and some computer tech staff may still use Floppies to make boot-up floppies for fixing problems with a broken Windows install on a computers by using a Floppy to boot their computer from a floppy to fix a problem like a broken master file table, or use MS-DOS to delete a file like a virus which is preventing Windows from logging in.

I agree removing Solitaire, Minesweeper, and Hearts is a bad idea since the games have a lot of fans especially Solitaire which is a popular one person card game.

People who really liked these games can play them online:

http://minesweeperonline.com

http://www.solitr.com

http://www.hearts-cardgame.com

Maybe they will eventually make them downloadable from the Microsoft website, like they did with Windows Live (where you could choose if you wanted to install Movie Maker, Photo Viewer, and all the extra-stuff that only certain people needed).

I think playing simple games online is kind of a hassle since you need to launch a web browser, open your bookmarks to the webpage with the game on it, and you can't play them if the website is offline, or your internet connection is not working, or too slow to play online games like people who use dial-up internet where downloading a bigger size picture takes many seconds...

I bet, the main reason MS removed Solitaire, Minesweeper, and Hearts is so MS don't have to pay royalty payments to the original makers/coders of the games when someone buys a new copy of Windows.

Considering that they are giving Windows 10 for free during the first year, that might be a possible reason. But are the websites that host these game paying royalty fees to the original creators?

I think the websites may not be paying royalty payments because a lot of websites use "Fair use" to use other people's content like pictures, video, and games for free. The creators may not be very likely to sue because they probably won't get much money since most smaller websites don't make a lot of websites.
