Satoru Iwata has spoken for the first time about the Nintendo DS's successor, saying that a new handheld will feature high-spec graphics and motion sensing technology.

In the same interview that bought news of the new Zelda game's 2010 release, Iwata revealed the first details of a new handheld, saying that it would boast "highly detailed graphics, and it will be necessary to have a sensor with the ability to read the movements of people playing".

Rumours surrounding a new Nintendo handheld have been gathering steam in recent months, with one of the most compelling reports suggesting that a next-gen DS would be powered by NVIDIA's Tegra Tech, a rumour that's been given added weight thanks to Iwata's recent comments.

Nintendo's existing DS will be celebrating its sixth birthday this year and has undergone several redesigns in its lucrative lifespan. We're hopeful of a reveal of its successor at this year's E3.
