Yesterday, I decided that I didn't want to use Maxthon anymore because Opera and Vivaldi seem to be faster, and I already have several other browsers on my PC, so I uninstalled it, and I checked to remove everything (settings, history, plugins etc.). After the uninstallation and the reboot, I checked the Program File folder in C:, and saw two Maxthon folders, one of them containing all the history and browsing suggestion files and the other containing the plugins.
I tried the same thing with FireFox, and there were no folders left.
Just a heads up for everyone using Maxthon. It is advertised as a browser that supports privacy, but because of its cloud-based nature, it is one of the least privacy-protecting browsers out there. It leaves traces and folders after being uninstalled, even if the user checks the "remove everything" boxes.
I checked out their support forums and saw that other people have commented about this too.
This is disappointing that Maxthon does not remove all its files after uninstallation.
There are some uninstaller programs like Revo Uninstaller which search for leftover folders, files, and registry keys after you use Revo Uninstaller to uninstall a Windows program.
yeah the basic system uninstall does not work. I use Your Uninstaller 7 and it really cleans up a bunch of stuff after the program is removed. Then I bleachbit and registry cleaner to get rid of additional stuff.
First time I've heard about BleachBit. I just installed it and will check it out. I see that it seems to work on Windows 10, but it doesn't contain Microsoft Edge in the list of browsers for which it cleans cache, cookies and whatnot...
Maxthon is a Chinese browser, and as such I take anything Chinese with a grain of salt when it comes to privacy..
I actually switched to Maxthon from Opera because Opera had killswitched the version I was using and forced me to update to a version that had less than a third of the features I did use and none of the features that I felt that made it stand out from the competition. And because I remember how awesome Opera was for the pocket pc, the mobile version pales in comparison since then and so I can't go back.
I have heard good things about Vivaldi and I am willing to give that a try, I just hope that they have a version out for Android, or will very soon.
Because I use an older version of Maxthon on my phone, is why I use it with Maxthon 3 on my pc.. that is about it really..
I use firefox sometimes bit it tends to be a resource hog and unfortunately Firefox Sync the mobile browser is capped at 5,000 bookmarks. This is a problem because my bookmarks are ones I have accumulated in all of my years online all the way from when I used Opera.
But because I can't use all of my bookmarks in Firefox, is why I use old versions of Maxthon on both my pc and phone.
That said though, I know that Maxthon has some issues with privacy because I noticed that I have been getting spam related to my browsing and searching in Maxthon, being sent to the email I have associated with my Maxthon Passport account.
For example, before I went to the Bahamas in February, I did a lot of searching based on air and sea travel restrictions and what I should pack for my trip, and literally a week later I started getting spam related to Disney and the Bahamas and travel packages as well.
