The family of a 28-year-old Jennifer Strange, who died back in January 2007 of acute water intoxication after participating in a radio station contest, was awarded $16.5 million by a Sacramento jury.

"Hold Your Wee for a Wii" was a contest put on my local Sacramento station KDND-FM where contestants drank as much water as they could without using the bathroom to win a Nintendo Wii console. Strange came in second, and drank over a gallon and a half of water without using the bathroom. She died about six hours later at her home.

10 radio station employees were fired after this incident.

huh, I never herd about this happening.

This is a sad story. A person died because of trying to win a Wii. I'm glad the family got awarded 16.5 Million.

Now that was a stupid contest. Holding in urine for a lengthy period of time is dangerous and can cause major health complications and even death. Unfortunately it was death in this case.

I can't believe the station employees actually promoted this.

Very sad indeed.

I heard of this.
The funny thing is that the radio station were trying to make a joke out of it but serious got on the way.

Wee for a Wii

I haerd about this and honestly, I think it is stupid that they awarded the family money.

This lady made a decision to enter a contest at her own risk. If we continue to take away personal responisblility for people and their own actions, this country is in for major problems in the years to come....

ETA: This is right up there with the lady that sued McDonald's when she got burnt with her coffee....because who would honestly expect their coffee to be hot?

My thoughts exactly.

I'm surprised some people are not very well informed these days since with the internet, library, and their family doctor. People can get more info before trying these kinds of things.
