How Come Players Always Play Snipers in FPS Games?

Sometimes there are 3 snipers on the same side but that's the max that I've seen. People normally do it to level up their gun. Sometimes it's fun to use, so yeah.. 
 
I usually play with an SMG or assault rifle.  Never cared much for snipers. lol
 
I can only really speak for myself here... But I tend to switch up what I use depending on the map I'm playing. (I also tend to play more Battlefield than Call of Duty... )  

The only guns I don't use much are shotguns simply due to limited range and wide open levels. (Though in close quarter TDMs? I might use one then.)

Others may like snipers because of the increased range a sniper rifle has over an Assault rifle. (Which in Battlefield is something you have to account for since you do need to worry about bullet drop over long distances.)

And a good sniper means that the enemy will get killed in one shot before they know what's going on.  (Though loads of good snipers tend not to camp one location since in FPS games when you kill someone they oft can see where you are. So good snipers tend to get a kill then move on to prevent people from sneaking up on them.)
 
put simply snipers are over powered and are the best strategy against most run and gun gameplay. It's when one run and guns with a sniper that they get really annoying.

They're nothing compared to my assault shield. A sniper bullet can't hit me and I'll walk up to the guy (more like run after he uses his bullet(s)) and knife him >_>
