Hey guys,
As most of you probably know Nintendo turned off online play on the original Nintendo Wii a few months back. This means you can't play any game online including my beloved Mario Kart. The homebrew community scrambled to figure out how online play and the Nintendo servers worked, they reversed engineered them and manage to get a few game working. But, for the average Joe this might not be possible.
Lets not forget the Halo 2 fiasco that went down recently as well.
So I got to thinking...how long before they turn off online for the 360 and PS3? With the nextgen consoles on the market I think it's just a matter of time. At some point someone is going to say; "You know if we disable those servers it would save us a ton of money!"
I saw this happen with Left 4 Dead 1 on the Xbox. I used to play competitively with and against good teams. Back when we started we would all get great ping times to a server on the east or east coast of the USA.
One day those servers messed up and all they probably needed was a reboot. Instead Valve just turned them off. So now we only have one server located in France (iirc) that obviously caused us horrible lag. It went down a few days later. So now we're stuck playing on local hosts (ala Call of duty) that don't support migration. So if the host leaves the game or lags out everyone does. They basically ruined the game for the loyal player base.
Hopefully someone out there is reverse engineering how live and the PSN network work. Thankfully the Xbox supports LAN play for most games (I think the PS3 does too) so we can use that to play against each other. That's a hacky solution though and I'd hate to have to set that up for both myself and my friends just so we could play on 360.
Man this turned into a novel..
So how long do you think they'll keep these consoles online and keep providing servers for them?
