I have gone sites and have been blocked and getting a message saying that a proxy setting was detected and that I should disable httpd. what is httpd and how do I disable it?

Try turning off your firewall temporarily. I think some sites don't work well when a certain port is closed by your firewall. I forgot which port it starts with a 4 and uses TCP.
