PS3 Slim and Price Drop Announced

The worst-kept secret in gaming is official: the PS3 slim is real. During its Gamescom press conference today in Germany, Sony announced the new system, which will retail for $299 US (or 299 Euros and 29,980 yen) and will hit shelves September 1, 2009.

What we understand of the system is very much in line with our guesstimates from yesterday. The new design has all of the same features of the current system, including WiFi, Bluetooth and whatnot. Our guys at the show say that it looks pretty much exactly the same as the current model, only smaller. It's 34 percent lighter, draws 34 percent less power and, most importantly, comes with a 120GB hard drive.

Oh, and as a bonus, the current system is dropping to $299 effective immediately.

The system measures 290 mm by 65 mm by 290 mm in terms of width, height and length, respectively, and includes a couple of new features. If you connect the unit to a Bravia TV via an HDMI cable, you'll be able to operate the XMB via your TV remote control. This feature is called Bravia Sync, and it also means that when you turn your TV off, the PS3 will automatically turn off as well. The PS3 also eliminated the "Install Other OS" feature that was on the previous run of PS3s.

$299 Will Become the 'New Standard'

News from Sony dropping the price of the PlayStation 3 to $299, and introducing a hardware redesign, will undoubtedly cause Microsoft to make a similar move to increase the perceived value of the Xbox 360.

But don't get your hopes up for another price drop anytime soon, though. We'll be stuck at $299 for quite awhile.

Electronic Entertainment Design and Research (EEDAR) analyst Jesse Divnich says the $299 price point will be the standard going forward for next-generation consoles. He also predicts it will be a long time before we see another price drop like this again.

"It is possible that both consoles may reach a $249 price point 12 months from now, but that will likely be the lowest prices will get in the next two years," he said.

"Going forward, both console manufacturers will focus more on delivering differentiating products and services to increase the value of their consoles. Both will continue to increase the size of their hard-drives and likely add additional hardware and software features to appeal to consumers."

PSP Minis on the Way

The rumors were true - the PSP (and PSPgo of course) is getting its own version of the App Store. Well, it's just the PlayStation Network, but the idea of bite-sized apps and games are on the way by the name of Minis. These games will feature a 100MB size limit, with 15 games launching on October 1st (the day the PSPgo is being released), and a total of 50 titles will hit in 2009.

The first few examples of games of this sort are Tetris and Fieldrunners. Hero of Sparta and MiniGore were also highlighted in a demo reel shown at Sony's Gamescom press conference. iPhone and iPod Touch gamers will certainly recognize Fieldrunners, Hero of Sparta and MiniGore as these are three of the most popular games on Apple's handheld.

Sony on PS3 Profitability, Backwards Compatibility, and More

What does the slimmer PS3 mean for Sony's bottom line?
"The redesign does kind of places us on a path towards profitability," Koller said citing the smaller size of the Cell chip, the fact that the system is lighter, and so on. "All of those things kind of lead to a better place in the cost of goods."

Should I wait for a crazy PS3 Slim bundle or larger hard drive?
Nope. There are no bundles or larger hard drive pairings currently planned.

Is backwards compatibility coming back?
"No plans right now," Koller said. "To be honest, there's such a substantial lineup of PlayStation 3 game discs now that we feel the consumer is more apt to be playing the PlayStation 3 games when they purchase the PlayStation 3."

When are these Minis -- bite-sized PSP games -- coming to the PlayStation Network?

Minis will be on the store and ready to October 1st -- the launch of the PSPgo.

What's the deal with these PSP comics?
Well, the prices and launch date are unannounced, but there should be more than 1,000 titles ready when the Digital Reader program goes live. Although Marvel was announced as a partner today, discussions are ongoing with publishers.
