I quit my job to go full time Indie

After seeing so many other posts similar to this I thought I should make my own thread about it. Yesterday I quit my job to go full time indie. Currently, my 1st game is being finished in C/C++, but I plan to complete many more projects using Game Maker in the near future. I wrote a blog post here.

What is "full time indie"?  I quit my job back in 2006 and it changed my life for the better!

They mean they quit their job to work on their independent games for a full time workload. Don't listen to Demon, there is nothing wrong with it, presuming you have enough money to support yourself and have done the relevant risk assessment stuff.

I would recommend looking at different engines than Game Maker because it is fairly limited compared to others. I would look into something like Unity or UDK if I were in your position. The fact that you are familiar with programming is great so you don't have to worry about looking for 'programmer-n00b' engines.

It is definitely a risky market to simply quit your job over....
 
Best of luck on your new indie games. I read on TechnoBuffalo that Minecraft sold 13 million games on Mac and PC, and minecraft is an Indie game, so it is possible to make a living making indie games.
 
I'll try not to under estimate your skills but as you can imagine a lot of people are not going to believe this is a good approach into a career.
One of the problems with people who attempt to create a game is they fail to realize that making the game is about 5%.
If you don't want to end up doing circles trying to make a little profit within the next 10yrs you'll need the make a thorough business plan and GDD to map out the next 3yrs for sure.

And a last suggestion is to keep your goals realistic. I noticed in the article a long term goal was to reach current gen-consoles. I don't want to hurt your feelings but the graphics on your trailer is like 8-bit(1990).

If you do find a way to produce REAL profit and not donations from kickstarter use your money wisely to benefit your game.

He has a budget of $400,000 planned out.
Not one single dollar on marketing and promotion. Not a single word on marketing.
This is a serious problem. While the game looks promising and good, with 8 hired designers and no one on payroll who actually cares about the business part it's a sure waste of $400K.

Not to be negative but why not wait to quit your job until after you've seen whether your first game is a success?

It's a bit big headed to think my first game which isn't even finished yet is going to be such a success i'm going to quit my paying job...

But good luck nonetheless.

Work contracts for developers often have clauses stating that everything they develop, even if they do it from their home and spare time, is owned by the company.
