If banner ads and pop-ups never existed, how will the internet be different?

The web would probably look better and cleaner, but more of the content on the web would be related to buying products on the website owners website, bigger websites might bash smaller websites to hope more people buy from them instead, or Website owners getting paid by marketing companies to pitch products for people to buy at Amazon, eBay, ClickBank, Xbox Live, PSN and other web stores. There would be less reviews, but promotions to buy products from Xbox Live, and Xbox websites bashing PSN's product, and say Xbox is so much better.

More website owner would try to like the late Billy Mayes who was a great infomercial and sales pitch guy who was great at selling products to people who watch infomercials.

More forums, website, and blog owners would make infomercials, product promotional content on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and other sites to convince people to buy their products they made or their friends make like books, web hosting, video games, e-books, and downloadable content from their website or their online store on Amazon, eBay, ClickBank, eJunkie, etc rather then just write topics they want to write about for free, and hope some people visit their sponsors by clicking on a ad to help pay for web hosting and domain fees.

Most of the web would probably be one big online shopping catalog full of sales pages on every website.

Ads will always exist, but if banner, and pop-up ads did not exist people will just make their own by using basic HTML link codes like

Indeed, but there is software like Dreamweaver, Frontpage which makes it incredibly fast to generate text and image links to make banner ads, and Amazon, and many other companies already give the banners for you, and the code for you to embed, so it is extremely fast if you have the right software.

Wordpress also make adding links, and image links of banners very easily that a noob can learn how to do it in minutes.

Indeed, people will buy stuff instead, or pay to use a website like how Netflix, Hulu Plus, iTunes, and many dating website works.

I also remember back in the mid to late 1990s ,when online advertising was not as popular these days, websites ask for donations, but some people abused donations by asking for money for not so useful stuff like paying for their plastic surgery bill, and non-website hosting and domain bills.
