I most likely giveaway an Ouya in a contest like website giveaway contest since it cost $99 for a new console, and it is cheaper than a Xbox One, PS4, and Wii U.

I could more easily afford to give an Ouya away as part of a contest without spending a lot of money like giving away an One, PS4, and Wii U to the winner,

Plus, most people who want a 360, PS3 and Wii already own one since they been out for so many years, so there is less of a point to give one away.

New 360, PS3, and non-Mini Wii still cost more than $99, and cost more to ship to the winner's home because of the size and weight of them.

Probably a 2DS because they're cheap and actually have games available. I'd be worried about regions though, so would probably need to buy it after the contest to know which region to buy for.

The 2DS is a good console which is inexpensive to buy, and cheaper to ship.

I agree one of the problems with mainstream console is that they are region lock where you can only play games on a console from the same region as the console.

Another problem is power adapter wall power plugs and voltages don't work with the different plug types and voltages around the world unless the console is powered by MicroUSB or USB like Google Android Consoles like the Gamestick, and Ouya which can be powered from a MicroUSB charger from a smartphone or tablet, or the supplied MicroUSB charger for the Console.

I think as the price of Computer Parts become cheaper because of cheaper technology, and sales, giving away a computer which can play many less entensive games like Minecraft, Counter Strike, Half-Life, Starcraft, Warcraft, emulators for consoles like N64. PS1, and Genesis, etc would also be an affordable alternative to giving away a console. There are also now free computer operating systems like Steam OS which turns a PC into a TV console, and free OS like Ubuntu and Linux Mint for Linux PC Gaming. But, shipping a PC could be very expensive because of the size, and weight.

How to Build a Computer for Under $100
The guy in the video spent $98 dollars building a cheap PC which runs Windows 7 and Linux Mint pretty good.

I wouldn't give away an Ouya... not to be too hard on it, but the thing really isn't in a very good place. It has few games really worth playing (most of which are ports from Google Play anyway) and no amount of exclusives to speak of. Plus the controller isn't very good (you're better off syncing a PS3/4 or xbox controller to it than using the native Ouya controller.)

And really for a hundred dollars it isn't that great of a buy.

The PS4 and Xbox One are a little too expensive for me to consider giving away.  Even the U, PS3 and 360 are still right about 200$ and that's still a fair bit of money.

So if I were going to give away anything, I'd go for the 2DS. It's a bit more expensive than the Ouya (though not as expensive as others) but it also has a much larger library of games and with a much greater support for new games too. (Not to mention it's a handheld and portable so you can play on the go much more easily than you could with an Ouya.)

Also regarding region locking... only Nintendo's consoles are region locked anymore. The PS3 (except for one game, Persona 4: Arena), PS4, Vita and Xbox One aren't region locked for physical copies of games.  (Though some digital games may only be available in certain regional marketplaces. )
The xbox 360 has some games that are region free and some that are locked... So it's kind of a mixed bag.

It depends on the intent of the giveaway. In my opinion it has to be something that is both desirable and inexpensive, so an Ouya wouldn't be my first choice. The "new" 3DS will probably cost $150 when it releases next year so that's something that I would consider. The Nexus Player releases this November and might be a good option for gamers that want emulation and the cheap offerings on the Play Store. The Vita TV might have been a good option as well if it wasn't so gimped.

Ouya wouldn't get a huge reach I think. Something like a Wii U or a handheld like the Vita, 2DS or 3DS would be a better option and most likely would achieve a greater number of participants.

This. I wouldn't expect many people to join for an Ouya, but a Wii U could bring in a lot of people if done right.

The main issue is to make the contest look legit.
I agree that it is hard to make a contest look real since there are a lot of fake contest made by spammers, and scammers who make fake online contests where you win an iPad, iPhone, money, etc to scam your money, or get your e-mail address to spam and scam you, so a lot of people may think a legit contest is a scam.

Using an Ouya as a prize may make a contest look more legit since it is not very expensive, so people know the forum owner can more likely afford to buy an Ouya as a prize vs buying a Wii U, Xbox One, and PS4 which is more expensive, and a lot of scammers use the Wii U, PS4, and Xbox One as a prize to trick you into giving your data away. Plus, few scammers use an Ouya as a prize because it is not very mainstream.

Over time, the Ouya will be a better prize because of the popularity of retro/classic, indie, and mobile games which are becoming more popular these days with their different fan bases like the fan base for Clash of Clans which has tens of millions of gamers who played it.

Which I think a 6+ year old forum background would help with very much :)

So I didn't do it right huh? :p
Always ways to improve. We should brainstorm a few things next time we plan to do something like this. Have a few ideas.

I know this is an old topic but I'd say a Nintendo DS and a flashcard combo. Just so the user can monkey with homebrew and their choosing of games and an imported DS is pretty cheap in relation to other consoles/handhelds out there.
