Apple is discontinuing the iMac Pro and will sell the ones it has left “while supplies last,” according to a new message added to the desktop’s product page Friday.

MacRumors first spotted the new notice on the iMac Pro’s product page and then confirmed with Apple that the device is being discontinued. Apple told the outlet that once supplies run out, the iMac Pro will no longer be available. In fact, the only version available now is the standard version, which costs $5,000, as Apple has eliminated additional upgrade options.

Per MacRumors, Apple said that the 27-inch iMac it released last summer, which is likely to be the last with an Intel chip, is the preferred choice for the vast majority of pro iMac users. The company added that customers who need even more performance and expandability can choose the Mac Pro.

The iMac Pro was basically a stop gap between the trash can Mac Pro and the new Cheesegrater Mac Pro. It initially made sense, but when the regular 27” iMacs started coming out with i9’s and 10GB Ethernet, along with having user upgradable RAM, it was good enough for prosumers. Then the Mac Pro came out for those who needed Xeons with the added benefit of being more of a traditional desktop for your pro level hardware, it does kind of make the iMac Pro useless. It’s like when the Macbook was in between the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro, but then they redesigned the Air making the regular MacBook pointless to exist.

Or it could be clickbait and the new rumored iMac redesign is coming out, so that’s what they mean by “discontinuing” it.

5k that is half the power of my 2k machine, shameful.

Most people buying the base models don’t need to push frame rates for the mid tier creative fields like photo, video, or audio editing, so it’s really just enough to run the monitor resolution and just enough for what work you’re trying to do. Also the 13” MacBook Pro’s and the Mac Mini’s can drive the 5K monitors on just integrated graphics, but nobody should be doing anything more than basic video editing on those anyway unless you like editing in 5 FPS. Audio editing and Photoshop work fine for the most part unless you’re running tons of VST’s on the audio end.

I wonder if the CPU, microchip, and electronic parts shortage cause by Covid19 lockdown shutting down electronics factories is one of the reasons the iMac Pro is discontinued.

From what it looks like from articles, my previous comment was right. Sales dropped after they came out with iMacs with i7’s and i9’s which cost less, and the i9 can outperform Xeon W’s in single core performance, making the regular iMacs more desirable for home use cases. Since the Mac Pro exists now, it’s more desirable for people who need a Mac with Xeon processors with the added benefit of being a traditional tower, so why get the iMac Pro in that situation?

Far as I'm aware and backed up by all the GFX labs at school only running apple, isn't Apple for pushing strong editing in video and images?
They’ve had a stronghold in the artsy fields for over 2 decades, so it’s not a new thing and something they were always known for. I started college in 2008, and my roommate was studying art and our college already had iMacs, and our music production department had the now old cheesegrater Mac Pros in the studio.

They jumped into 4K and 5K resolutions at a pretty early time, and the color accuracy at that price range is really good.

On the music side, they already come with audio options pre-installed as opposed to Windows that you have to pay for third party software, and the way they handle drivers essentially makes everything plug and play, hence the “it just works” moniker fans always spout. At my school you had to “rent” out the studio for only a couple hours at a time, and you don’t wanna waste that time trying to get your hardware to work.

The iMac Pro was always a stopgap solution anyway. It was released because professionals wanted a new Mac Pro but Apple didn't want to update the trashcan design and creating a totally new design would take a lot of time. So the iMac Pro was released to hold people over until the new cheese grater Mac Pro could be released.

can't tell me Apple don't have enough people to do it.
