The Indian government is working on its operating system named BOSS, and it's planning on ditching any kind of Microsoft-related application.

According to a report on dnaindia.com, the BOSS distro Bharat Operating System Solutions is being worked on by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, with the help of Gujarat Technical University and DRDO.

That sounds like a good thing, but it's not exactly forthcoming. The truth is that BOSS is actually based on Debian, so it's not a home-grown operating system per se. It's also using GNOME as a desktop, so all that talk about being accessible to Windows users doesn't really apply unless they make some serious changes to it.

I wonder why India needs to make a custom version of Debian Linux instead of just using Debian or Ubuntu which is based on Debian.

to better rip off people with. Would never use it, to even test.

Probably for the same reasons why Google had to make Android OS, which is a very modified version of Linux...

I guest, a custom version of Linux will be easier to use to spy on India's computer users by pre-installing spyware instead of Debian which does not have as many privacy concerns like Ubuntu which added Amazon Ads to the built-in file search engine which made many Ubuntu users switch to Linux Mint for privacy concerns because they don't want Amazon to be reading and using their file searches to show Amazon Ads for products like music, and online video.

Debian is mainly a server operating system for web servers, so it is very lightweight as well, and can run on very old and slow computers.
