They probably forgot due to 25 years of pit not being the main hero in a game. Game history is likely to be forgotton that way.

I don't think this is done out of ignorance on the part of the ad makers. Rather, I think it is done to cater for the assumed ignorance of the general public.
Most people will not have heard of Pit or Kid Icarus before. To them, it is new. And Nintendo of Europe obviously think that selling it as a new character and series will get them more sales than referring to Pit's previous outings (they weren't amazing games, and they were never terribly popular, so saying something like "A much-loved character finally returns" would be a down-right lie).

And I think that StarTropics was also an awful game and that's why Nintendo forgot about it after two AWESOME games? Huh?

Pit was never forgotten by the Generation X and some early from the Millennial generation. The young ones that started from the Snes onward wouldn't care much for Pit since they didn't knew he even existed, but that doesn't mean that we waited all this years for a comeback. Now is Mikes Jones time to Uprise.

You do know the original games were actually pretty well known. Heck, some people probably knew Pit from Captain N the Game Master if you go back far enough.

Not to mention:

BOTH games were on the eShop recently. The games/series were mentioned and known from Smash Bros Brawl. Kid Icarus was playable as a masterpiece.

Yeah, real unsuccessful.

Also, speaking of brawl Pit was one of the the first char you play as in the sub space emissary after the Mario/Kirby prologue.
