Today, we're introducing video calling in Messenger. Now you can have face-to-face conversations with your friends and the people you care about via Messenger.

Video Calling looks like a good feature for the Facebook Messenger App because it means people can use Video calling in Messenger instead of using Skype, and other video chat apps which they may not have installed on their smartphone or tablet while a lot of people have Facebook Messenger installed on their device.

I wonder would video calling also be coming to WhatsApp which is also owned by Facebook.

hopefully this don't lead to more online abuse.

Unless this app offers group video calls too, it won't manage to compete with Skype. Skype is just too well-known and user-friendly, at least in my opinion.
Video chat on Messenger may not be huge competition with Skype, but it seems more convenient than using Skype. A lot of people use Facebook Messenger at Facebook.com, and its App for smartphone and tablet. Pressing a video chat button on Messenger to start a video chat  button on Messenger looks very convenient.

Almost everybody who is online these days has a Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram account these days, so there are a lot of users who already can use Facebook video chat if Facebook also let WhatsApp, and Instagram users video chat with Facebook users on Messenger.

I think Group video chat is not a big deal for regular users who mostly video chat with one person at a time because it is more private than chatting with many people at once.

I rarely do one-on-one video chatting. Most of the times I've ever video chatted on Skype or Tinychat.com it was with several of my friends at the same time. Group video chats are fun for me. When it's just one-on-one, it gets awkward because I'm shy and I can't keep a conversation going for a long time, unless it's a family member or a friend whom I know in real life.

Skype is well established though, so most people should have everyone on skype and may not bother with FB's messenger.

Skype is well established on Windows Desktop computers. I think Apple Mac OS X users use Apple's Facetime video chat program, and Linux users use Google Hangouts video chat in Google Chrome, Pidgin, and other Linux video chat app for Linux because Skype for Linux is not very good.

Skype is not as popular on popular mobile operating systems where Skype is the 11th most downloaded free app on the Google Play App store, and 23rd most downloaded free app on the Apple iOS free apps chart while Facebook and Facebook Messenger are in the top 2 most downloaded free apps on Google Play, iOS, and other Apps stores where Facebook has its app published.

Facebook Messenger is the most well established  messaging app on mobile devices since billions of Facebook users can use Messenger from within Facebook.com mobile website by clicking on the messenger link on m.Facebook.com, or using Messengers app which users installed in Android, and iOS mobile operating systems.

Facebook, and Facebook Messenger are also the number 1 and 2 most downloaded free App on Google Play, and Apple iOS App store free most downloaded top charts, so there are many hundreds of millions to billions of Facebook Messenger users on mobile. Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, is also in  the number 9 spot of the top 10 most downloaded free apps in Google Play store,  and number 3 spot of top 10 apps in Apple iOS, so if Facebook combines Instagram with Facebook.com, there would be even more users. Facebook owned WhatsApp is also pretty popular, so Facebook could get a lot of Messenger users if Facebook combines WhatsApp with Messenger since they both do the same thing since they are both Instant messaging apps.

Facebook users can also use Messenger from Facebook.com website which is the most popular social networking websites in the world, and the 2nd most popular website in the world.

I agree, Facebook is starting to add too many features to Messenger like Emoji, Stickers which are like larger Emoji, voice chat, and video chat.

I think Facebook should also release a lightweight version of Messenger which just has Text chat, and picture sharing, so Messenger does not use up as much  storage space, data/bandwidth, battery life RAM, and CPU resources on less powerful smartphones and tablets.

Will this work for desktop browser-based facebook too or is it exclusively for mobile devices?

Facebook has video based calling, but you need to use Firefox, Google Chrome, and Opera according to https://www.facebook.com/help/211644178877843

I'm not sure if video chatting works with mobile versions of Firefox, Google Chrome, and Opera for Android, and iOS.

I think you can also use App emulators like Bluestack Android emulator for Windows, or a Google Android Virtual machines to use Facebook Messenger, and video chat for Android.
