You have read the topic title right, one of the largest forum free hosting of IPB software has gone down earlier today. It's hard to say what the hell happened but the staff that manage it say they can't tell what happened. They ask not to blame them or the other staff members but due to legal issues they can't say what happened.

So if you have a IPBfree forum then it's gone and so is all of your content on that forum for all of eternity. Even though the staff say they can't say what happened I wish you luck in drawing out and drinking their blood until they say something as I would be pretty pissed as well since IPBfree gave no notice of this happening. In the mean time I wish everyone who had a IPBfree a quick recovery to your community and I highly recommend jcink.com as a replacement.

If you like to rage then do it below in the other sites:

http://ipbfree.37project.org/ (a temp IPBfree forum discussion about the incident they also give some tips on how to recover some of your important forum content)

I would like to take this time to say that this very forum once rested on a IPBfree forum software and all I can say right now is that I am happy I didn't remain with them.

Jcink seems like a better free Invision free forum host.I hope most of the forum owners remember to backup their databases.

jcink is a far better hosting then IPBfree was, and sadly you could not back up your forum with IPBfree which is why I said most of your forum content on a IPBfree forum is gone forever!

IPBFree wasn't as good as the other Invision boards, the last time I heard they still haven't dealt with spam bots flooding their free boards, probably was a few years ago.

Only if they ignore copyright infringement complaints from those with more money than God.. in that case, then yeah, but otherwise, no.. like Jcink said, if that were the case then Invisionfree would be gone as well..

Invisionfree won't be far behind the chopping block. But I certainly hope Jcink hosting stays up so long as jcink can run it and keep it going like it should.

To be honest it is about time that make it illegal to ohst free forums like ipb free and freeforums etc, if your not willing to pay for hosting etc then you should not be allowed to admin

It is not illegal to host free forums, but I heard Invision free got shut down because of copyrighted content sharing like using Invision free forums to share copyrighted mp3s, pictures, movies, and software.

I disagree a lot of forums like Gamingforce got started on free forums if people had to pay a lot of great forums won't exist these days. The same goes for blogs since a lot of bloggers started on free services like Blogspot, Xanga, Livejournal, before they bought hosting for their blog.

I heard that they stopped offering free forums because of copyright infringement or something like that...

I heard it from a friend, so I don't have a link as a source to confirm it, sorry.

But, I'm feeling sorry for the admins that used that host to run their community.

Indeed, it was such a popular host as well. This is one of the main reasons to pick a host that offers backup of posts, memberlists, etc.

There is no reason to make it illegal since most if not all current free forum hosting use old outdated versions of forum software. If it was with the current up to date forum software I could see the need for the banning of them.

IPS are the ones who gave the hosting companies the green light to use IPB 1.3 in the first place. For them to suddenly go after the free hosts is them reneging on their initial agreement. It would be similar to PHPBB, MYBB, Proboards and other free software suddenly going paid, and then forcing the hosts to purchase licenses for every single board on their service. I am not saying that that is what happened to IPBFree, but certainly, there are much bigger fish to fry. If this was the case, then IF would have been gone a long time ago.

Anyway, some people actually run a forum because they enjoy it, and to get away from the stress and b.s. in their lives and would rather leave their hard earned money toward the things that are actually most important. Some actually prefer to remain on a free host, not because they are cheap or can't afford it, but because they enjoy what they do, and know that adding money to the equation, would turn their once enjoyable hobby into a source of stress and aggravation, and it would be yet another expense.

I've seen more people running forums on paid software and hosting that shouldn't be allowed to run a forum, than I have seen with those on free hosts. Having the money to pay for a license and hosting isn't correlated to being a good admin.
